Wheel of Rotary

VOLUME LXVIII 07 September 2016 NUMBER 10

PROGRAM this Wednesday, September 7th, will be back in our usual habitat, Highland country Club, and will be brought to us by our District Governor, Raymond Ray, from the Rotary Club of Griffin Daybreak (for those who can't remember to look at the bottom of the bulletin and read that for themselves). PLEASE make every effort to be present. We learn a lot about our club and our organization by his remarks. ALSO, please remember to wear all your Rotary hardware (medals, badges, fellowship pins, ribbons, et cetera) Just pretend you're a Russian General and put it all on!

Please remember it is customary to give the Governor a standing ovation when he is introduced. (We think this may be because some clubs are not in the mood to do so after he speaks).

PROGRAM last week was moved to Tuesday and consisted of our support for the annual Kickoff Campaign Breakfast of the United Way Campaign. The breakfast was delicious, the bacon was almost perfect and the grits were, especially if one put cheese on them. We all know the efficient and dedicated Executive Director of United Way is a Rotarian, our own Patty Youngblood, and serving with her are our own Bill Stump, Vice Chairman of the Board. Other board members from our club include Cole Pugh, Marlene Rhodes, and Renae Willis as well as Mitch Key's Rotarianne, Meredith. This year's campaign Chair is Jack Morman, the indefatigable principal of Hollis Hand School. Jack was the main speaker at the breakfast, and did a remarkable job. He recognized the various agencies United Way supports and explained how this year's theme "Find Your Superhero Within" relates, telling us a superhero can find something inside them that helps them overcome obstacles and use their powers to help others, which means we all have a little superhero within us. Participating in United Way helps people we did not even know needed help and helps people we do not even know and may never see, but that means we are doing good beyond our own understanding. He gave so many individual examples from a variety of the agencies under the U. W. aegis. Many times, individuals get help form one agency who then can refer them to get help from another of the allied United Way agencies, and this is only possible because they are all linked through United Way. The goal this year is $1,000,000.00. But, as Jack added, it is not the number, it is the people in need whose problems United Way knows and knows how to help. He said "Be Heroic: Live United." Our own Patty told us that 21,000 people were served, that they know of, last year by United Way agencies. That's about a third of our population. She also told us of a new branch of their organization, a woman's leadership council, called the Magnolia Society. Our own Charis Acree is chair. The group picks a signature issue, and their's is Early Learning, and their signature fund raiser will be the Merry Market. The 6th annual Merry Market will be coming in October. United Way, locally, also is having a free weekly pre-school education program for 3 & 4 year olds and their parents at the Bank of America second floor. It will start September 23, but an Open House will be held September 13. Anyone interested in having a United Way Campaign at their business this year is invited to a (or send someone from your office) Campaign Coordinator Training on September 8, 2016 at IHOP (breakfast included) 8:30 to 10 a.m. Reservations are required, so call 706 884-8292 to sign up or get more details.

Our newest member, Karin Thompson, discovered on her first experience with the bulletin (hope it wasn't too traumatic) that the links at the bottom of this thing were not directing one to the desired or intended destination, and so she has fixed that for us (if cutting and pasting it from her email back to ours didn't ruin it). We ALL know that our editor is computer illiterate (and doesn't care) and does not dabble in math, science, or any other forms of witchcraft, so if it got fixed, please thank Karin.

As usual, when we re-route our meetings, there just isn't as much to put in the bulletin, so we look for filler. What follows certainly qualifies.

If you don't swear while driving, then you're not paying attention to the road at all.

If there is a bar where everyone knows your name, you're probably an alcoholic.

Sometimes, people should drink a glass of water just to surprise their livers.

Why does toilet paper need to advertise? Who is NOT buying this product?

Common sense is not a flower that grows in everyone's garden.

Will health nuts feel stupid one day, lying in the hospital, dying of nothing.

Of course, we are strongly of the opinion that every minute added to life by exercise was wasted exercising.

Death is the number one killer in the world.

Life is sexually transmitted.

Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die.

The bad thing about Old Age is it doesn't last very long.

[With thanks to Betty Lester, Louis' Rotarianne, for most of the above]
