President Alex's Message

Fellow Rotarians-

We had an amazing Saturday partnering with Alpharetta Rotary for the Polar Plunge. We as a club raised in excess of $7,500 and the event as a whole raised over $150,000! Special thanks to Rotarian and Mayor Kurt Wilson for jumping off the high dive and for John Michael for leading the charge. This year has been a year of planting seeds to grow partnerships and economic opportunities to raise funds in addition to our Golf Tournament. The Mayor has already agreed to challenge Alpharetta's Mayor next year and we expect to raise much more money in the years to come!

Special thanks to all who jumped into the cold water.

See you Thursday!

- Alex

Lunches for Learning: Phil Dodson to Speak

Lunches for Learning exists to break the cycle of poverty in rural southern Honduras by providing a healthy lunch to school children every school day; thereby allowing these children to remain in school so they can complete their education and become employable in the Honduran economy.  Phil joined the Lunches for Learning team as Executive Director in 2016 after having spent the previous 10 years with the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church. His earlier career included 11 years in Higher Education administration and 8 years in the Credit and Financial Services industry. He is a 1982 graduate of Roswell High School and a 1986 graduate of LaGrange College.  Phil lives in the north Georgia city of Cleveland with Tracy, his wife of 36 years. Phil and Tracy have three adult children between the ages of 23 and 28.

Laws of Life Essay Contest Needs Judges

If you wish to be an essay judge, please click here to fill in a Volunteer Sign Up form.  Deadline is approaching and 25 additional judges are still needed!  On the Sign Up form, you will indicate your training option.  If you cannot attend a training session, it will be recorded and sent out to Essay Judges in addition to the Essay Judge Training manual.  Select one or more Teams on the Essay Judge Team Meeting Signup Genius.  Questions?  Contact Elizabeth Kuka-Dos Santos: elizabeth@georgialawsoflife.org

As a Rotary Club Contest Sponsor, your club members are invited to participate in the judging process which will kick off with the essay due date of February 12, 2024. This year, Georgia Laws of Life Essay Contest is introducing a new submission and judging platform hosted by Award Force. While the Contest and its judging process remain the same, it will look and feel a little different from last year. School-Level Essay Judge overview:

  • February 12th - Essay Judges begin receiving a notification from Award Force to create their account.
  • February 19th - Essay Judges will begin to receive their essay assignments and Google Calendar invites with their team information. Teams of 2 essay judges and one team lead receive 30-48 essays that they will read and score independently using Award Force. We estimate that it should take approx. 3 hours to read and score all the essays.  Two days before the Team Meeting judges are asked to complete scoring.
  • February 26 - Team meetings begin. On the day of your Team Meeting, teams use GoTo to meet with a volunteer team lead to discuss and select school-level winners and Honorable Mentions.
